The Student Exhibit is the portion of the Edmonds Arts Festival which displays more than 1000 pieces of artwork created by students in the Edmonds School District. The goal of this popular exhibit is to provide a showcase which celebrates the talents and creative expressions of our young local artists. Many of the schools received a Visual Arts Grant from the Edmonds Arts Festival Foundation to produce the art shown in this exhibit. The participating students range from Kindergarten to 12th grade.
Participation in the Student Exhibit
Eligible students must be in grades K-12 and one of the following must apply:
- currently enrolled in the Edmonds School District or a private school within the district boundaries
- home schooled or a resident within the Edmonds School District boundaries,
Elementary (grades K-6): Limit 1 piece per student (school select or open class)
Secondary (grades 7-12): Limit 2 pieces total per student (school select and/or open class)
The artwork is selected through 2 different procedures: School Select and Open Class.
School Select
The art that is juried into the exhibit by each school is called School Select. Participating schools must provide a representative to coordinate their jury and entry process. Students should check with their teachers or office managers for information about their entry procedures. The process will vary for each school but can start early in the year, so don’t wait too long to find out.
Open Class
The Open Class jury is available for students that do not have the School Select option, like home schooled students and schools without a representative. Students that were not chosen in their School Select process can also enter the Open Class jury. Grades 7-12 can enter one piece into Open Class if they have one School Selected piece. May 1st is the last day to enter your Open Class artwork.
Open Class entries can be submitted from noon to 5pm on April 30th and 10am to 5pm on May 1st at the Edmonds School District office located at 20420 68th Ave. W. in Lynnwood. You can also make an appointment to enter your artwork earlier by calling (425)431-7115 (425)431-7115 or (425)431-7118 (425)431-7118 . A digital photograph will be taken of your artwork at the time of your entry. Original artwork is not to be left at the district office. Results of the Open Class jury will be sent by May 21st. If your work is selected by the jury you will be instructed on where and when to bring your artwork for the Festival.
Criteria
Artwork will be judged on the following criteria: originality, technique, composition, risk-taking and craftsmanship.
Mediums include oil, acrylic, and watercolor paint, charcoal, pastel, ink, crayon, print work, photography, textiles, clay, fused glass, wood and recycled materials. The size for flatwork should not exceed 24”x36”. All flatwork must be mounted or matted. Please, no glass-framed artwork. Stretched canvas must have a wire hanger, no saw tooth hangers.
